On March 21, 2012, Rekia Boyd had gathered with a group of friends in a Chicago suburb park when off-duty police officer Dante Servin drove by because someone had called police and complained about noise in the park.
After a heated discussion between officer Servin and Rekia's friends Servin pulled his gun and fired five shots into the group, killing Rekia Boyd and injuring another member of the group. He claimed that someone in the group had pulled a gun, but no gun was found on either person of the group. One of Rekia's friends had a cell phone in his hand.
Servin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2013 but was cleared two years later. In 2016 Servin resigned from the force.
