In 1975 Kwame Ajamu was 17 years old when he and his brother and one of their friends were sentenced to death for a murder they didn't commit. The conviction was based solely on the false eyewitness testimony of a 13-year-old boy. When the boy later told the police that he lied about the boys he had identified they told him that it's too late to change his story. The police did not reveal that the boy recanted his false testimony.
Kwame was wrongfully incarcerated for 28 years. In 2014 the convictions of all three were finally vacated after the witness publicly recanted his story from 1975.
