On August 1st, 2016, police officers arrived at Korryn Gaines' apartment in Randallstown, Maryland with a warrant for a traffic violation. They broke into the apartment when Korryn Gaines refused to cooperate.
During the stand-off Ms. Gaines pointed a gun at the police officers saying they had no right to break into her apartment and that she will protect her son. Officer Royce Ruby fired and killed Korryn Gaines.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) strongly condemned that police “decided that they needed to use deadly force to execute that warrant, and needed to expose themselves to the known risk of deadly force being used on them, knowing that a five year old child might be in the line of fire”.
