Ezell Ford was unarmed when he was stopped by police officers Sharlton Wampler and Antonio Villegas on 11 August 2014. They claimed Ezell was dealing drugs.
Ezell was suffering from depression and schizophrenia. His mental state was known to the LAPD officers who pushed Ezell on the ground, knees on Ezell's back.
Wampler and Villegas claimed that Ezell Ford made "suspicious moves" and that they were attacked by him. However, witnesses said that Ezell had put his hands above his head when he was told to do so. 25-year-old Ezell was shot three times, once from close range in the back.
No charges were filed against the officers who killed Ezell Ford that day. District Attorney Jackie Lacey concluded that the police officers acted in self-defense and did not commit a crime.
Neither did Ezell Ford.
