Daniel Prude was a 41-year-old Black man with mental health problems. He was visiting his brother Joe in Rochester. In the early morning of March 23rd, 2020 Joe Prude called the police and asked for help because his brother Daniel was acting strangely.
When the police arrived they found Daniel Prude walking walking on the street, naked and bleeding. He was unarmed and was following the orders from the officers. They handcuffed his hands on his back as he was lying face down on the street, still naked.
On the body camera footage the police officers can be heard mocking Daniel Prude who is in great distress. At no point are the officers trying to calm him down. Instead they put a spit mask over his face. Then they knelt on his back and put his face on the ground until Daniel Prude stopped breathing.
On September 4th, 2020, the seven officers who killed Daniel Prude have been suspended.
On February 22nd, 2021 a grand jury decided that the police officers will not face any charges.
